Pointers to Jain diet and to improve one’s health –
- Jain diet is a Low GI Index diet (Keeps one fuller for a longer time, reduces bad fat creation and artery clogging triglycerides and has less insulin creation)
- Jain diet helps with Detachment and keeping a good mental health.
- Be Vegetarian.
- Eat less and eat healthy. Diet is way more important than exercise. Eat food primarily to stay alive and not for indulgence. It is the wrongful indulgence that brings misery in the form of health issues, weight gain and even robs mental alertness.
- Consume healthy fats only.
- Have minimum consumption of refined vegetable oil; Cold pressed extra virgin Peanut oil is the best for cooking amongst oils available due to higher heat tolerance.
- Can have some quantity of good quality cold pressed extra virgin olive oil; such in the form of sesame seed oil and even coconut oil should be fine in moderate quantity.
- Use Ghee for cooking when suitable; Ghee (clarified butter).
- Ghee > Butter; Ghee has milk solids layer removed, which makes it healthy fat when consumed in limited quantity. It is also taste better, brings out the aroma of spices, can be heated at high flame, does not require salt for taste like butter does, & is medicinal food.
- Have some Almonds + Walnuts daily; improves Heart health.
- Milk –
- Milk = Milk Fat + Milk Solids
- Milk Fat – Cream, Butter and Ghee is rich in Vitamin D; Vegetarians need it with being the only food source of Vitamin D with the other source being sunlight, so they need to consume milk fat or simply have milk;
- Ghee > Butter; Limit Cream and Butter intake. Ghee is best for vitamin D – amongst other reasons it acts as a solvent for Vitamin D (and other vitamins) and carries it to different parts of body and particularly to bones.
- Animal based Fats is required by the human body for optimum health and plant based fats cannot be a replacement for it.
- Milk Solids is rich in Vitamin B12 and the only source for vegetarians, so they need to consume milk; also rich in proteins.
- Consumption is to be limited because Milk solids contains chemical structure that harms heart health by clogging arteries, making it a necessary evil. Misconception is that Milk fats are unhealthy (moderate quantity), rather it is the Milk solids ( i.e Milk with milk fats removed ) that is harmful for Heart health; this being one of the reasons of consuming Ghee instead of Butter is that it is healthier fats with having the milk solids removed.
- Consume Yoghurt daily.
- Vegetables –
- Avoid all the root vegetables.
- Onion, Potato, Yam, Carrot, Turnip, Garlic, Carrot
- In addition to insulin spike, they affect the state of mind destroying better consciousness (Tamasic).
- Root veggies are full of starchy carbohydrates and/or high in sugar like carrots which converts into bad fats during the digestion process. It is high glycemic, which means it raises blood sugar quickly and then later makes it fall fast, leads to fat accumulation and makes one hungry faster leading to higher calorie consumption in a day.
- Garlic and Onion creates body odor.
- Lotus roots are dirty and as they grow in unhygienic conditions, and are Tamasic, and so are not consumed by Jains.
- Can have more of vegetables especially green ones if it suits your ayurvedic body and mind type (vata – pitta – kapha); Spinach, Celery, Kale, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cucumber and such.
- Brinjal/Eggplant is not a useful vegetable nutrition wise and by its effects on body; to a lesser extent even tomato and bell peppers.
- Limit Green peas, Sweet corn, Pumpkin and Sweet potato, as they are carb rich.
- Make use of Lemon and Turmeric powder daily.
- Mushrooms are fungi and is not classified as being vegetarian; also, is Tamasic. Jains don’t eat Mushrooms. Similar reasoning for Seaweed which is an Algae.
- Avoid all the root vegetables.
- Have fruits but better to have in limited quantity as they are carb rich due to natural sugar. Avoid Pineapple and Watermelon as they are High GI index.
- Don’t drink Fruit Juice; not even natural and fresh as it is devoid of fiber and leads to insulin spike. Exception can be made for likes of limited quantity of Orange juice.
- Reduce Carbohydrates.
- Almonds + Walnuts in partial sense, are a good protein substitute for Wheat+ Rice, as it contains similar protein profile, has lower GI index and contains healhy fats. Lentils have a different protein profile than Nuts and Grains, while Milk has complete protein profile.
- Wheat is a must but rice can be avoided.
- Rice spikes insulin levels more and has less proteins than Wheat. Rice also leads to more weight gain and is not so diabetic friendly.
- White rice > Brown rice
- 3/4th portion of Wheat + 1/4th portion of Rice in the plate is a good combination.
- Careful selection of vegetables and fruits.
- Breakfast – Oatmeal (add walnut or almonds for complete protein profile) and Quinoa (complete protein profile) in limited quantity are good options.
- Figure out both your body and mind type from Vata, Pita and Kapha Ayurveda types, and adjust food and exercise and lifestyle accordingly. One can be mentally one type and physically other type.
- Tamasic food takes mind into depressive state. Sattvic food leads to a blissful state (and hence also gives a peaceful sleep at night); consume moderate of Rajasic foods.
- Prefer low GI Index foods. See below charts.
- Jaggery powder > Brown Sugar > White Sugar
- Reduce Sugar and Salt consumption.
- Avoid peanuts as they are not healthy.
- Moong dal is the best of lentils. Toor dal is next. Nutrient wise and easy to digest. Also, Low GI Index.
- Beans like Kidney beans are High GI Index and is less of Sattvic and shouldn’t be consumed daily.
- Chickpeas in limited quantity are just okay.
- Eliminate consumption of packaged food or reduce it to near zero levels.
- Cut down caffeine consumption to near zero levels. Caffeine – Tea, Coffee and Chocolate. Tea is better than Coffee healthwise, and also as spices can be added for flavour. Better to have only in morning. Go for Decaffeinated coffee.
- Eat Dinner by Sunset; to be strictly followed as three hours before bedtime is required for healthy digestion and for less insulin secretion. Jains are particular about this.
- Hydrate yourself enough after waking up in morning.
- Fast regularly, as your digestive system needs break in between and also burns out the bad fats accumulated.
- Soak in the sunlight as the body needs Vitamin D.
- High heat cooking destroys nutrients in food.
- Jain diet is the best for one’s health, best for environment, and also values animal and plant life. Jains have/had the highest life expectancy in the world and lived the longest which has reduced due to civilizational decay.

Note : Map does not account for genetic differences that leads to different body fat percentage with everything else remaining same.

Too many factors that are not accounted here like for example Punjab’s water is contaminated by fertilizer usage, and the integrity of the dataset can be questioned, but in general the conclusion that meat based diet increases cancer risk is well understood from a long time.
