Digambara and Svetambara

Around the 4th century BCE, the Jain community split into two main sects based on their interpretation of asceticism and scripture:

FeatureDigambara (“Sky-clad”)Svetambara (“White-clad”)
Monastic ClothingMonks do not wear clothes to signify total detachment.Monks and nuns wear simple white robes.
WomenBelieve women must be reborn as men to achieve Moksha.Believe women are equally capable of achieving Moksha.
IdolsRepresented with downcast eyes, unadorned.Represented with prominent eyes and often adorned.
